STL Volume Calculator — Weight in Your Browser
This private stl volume calculator measures solid mesh volume, bounding box size, and estimated filament or resin weight from an STL or OBJ file — entirely on your device, with no upload. Pick PLA, PETG, ABS, TPU, or resin presets, check bed fit against common printers, then send grams to the 3D Print Cost Calculator for a client quote.
Solid volume is a 100% infill upper bound. Your slicer applies infill, walls, and supports — slicer grams win for final quotes. Use this for fast pre-checks before you slice.
How do I measure STL volume and weight without uploading?
-
1
Drop STL or OBJ
Drag a binary or ASCII STL, or an OBJ mesh, onto the tool above. Parsing runs in a Web Worker on your machine.
-
2
Choose material density
Select PLA, PETG, ABS, TPU, or standard resin. Weight = solid volume (cm³) × density (g/cm³).
-
3
Read box and bed fit
Bounding box shows L × W × H in millimeters. Compare against A1 mini, P1S, MK4, or Ender 3 beds.
-
4
Send grams to quote
Click Send to quote to open the 3D Print Quote Generator with grams pre-filled. Add print hours from your slicer for a full quote.
What does a 10 mm cube STL weigh in 2026?
Worked example — 10×10×10 mm test cube (August 2026)
Volume = 10 mm × 10 mm × 10 mm = 1,000 mm³ = 1.0 cm³
Weight (g) = volume (cm³) × density (g/cm³)
PLA (1.24 g/cm³): 1.0 × 1.24 = 1.24 g solid equivalent
PETG (1.27): 1.27 g ·
ABS (1.04): 1.04 g ·
TPU (1.20): 1.20 g ·
Resin (1.10): 1.10 g
Bounding box: 10 × 10 × 10 mm — fits every preset bed (A1 mini 180×180 mm through P1S 256×256 mm).
Reality check: Slice the same cube at 15% infill, 3 perimeters in Bambu Studio and you might see ~0.35 g instead of 1.24 g. That gap is why we say slicer grams win — use this calculator for ballpark mass and bed-fit, then copy slicer numbers into the 3D Print Cost Calculator.
Is bounding box the same as STL volume?
No. The bounding box is the smallest rectangular prism that contains every vertex — length × width × height in millimeters. Volume is the space enclosed by the actual triangle mesh, computed with a signed tetrahedron sum from the mesh origin.
A hollow vase can have a tall box but moderate volume. A thin L-bracket can have a compact box and low volume. Never quote filament from box dimensions alone.
Does infill change the STL volume reading?
Solid volume = 100% infill upper bound. The mesh file describes outer walls only; it does not know your slicer’s infill %, wall count, or supports. A 20% infill job uses roughly less filament than solid volume × density (plus shells). For paid client work, always trust Bambu Studio, PrusaSlicer, or Cura grams after slicing.
Quick mental model: estimated grams ≈ solid volume × density × infill factor, but shells, top/bottom layers, and supports break the simple multiplier. That is why Kick-Start sends you to the quote tool with a starting gram value, not a final invoice.
What filament and resin densities does the calculator use?
As of 2026-08-31 — vendor datasheets vary by color and batch. Sources linked below.
| Material | Density (g/cm³) | Typical use | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| PLA | 1.24 | Decor, prototypes, low warp | Prusa PLA guide |
| PETG | 1.27 | Stronger parts, mild flex | Prusa PETG guide |
| ABS | 1.04 | Heat resistance, enclosures | Prusa ABS guide |
| TPU | 1.20 | Flexible, phone cases, fabric prints | Bambu TPU wiki |
| Standard resin | 1.10 | SLA / MSLA miniatures | Bambu resin types |
Batch unlock lets you save custom densities for specialty filaments (carbon-filled PLA, etc.). When in doubt, read the spool label and enter your own g/cm³.
Will my STL fit on a Bambu, Prusa, or Ender bed?
As of 2026-08-31 — printable area from vendor specs (mm). Always leave margin for brim and purge.
| Printer preset | Bed (W × D mm) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Bambu Lab A1 mini | 180 × 180 | A1 mini specs |
| Bambu Lab P1S | 256 × 256 | P1 series specs |
| Prusa MK4 | 250 × 210 | MK4 product page |
| Creality Ender 3 (stock) | 220 × 220 | Ender 3 listing |
The tool flags when any bounding-box axis exceeds the selected bed. Rotate the part or scale in CAD before you waste a long slice.
Are STL files uploaded to Kick-Start servers?
No. Mesh parsing and volume math run locally in your browser. Client IP parts, unreleased product STLs, and NDA meshes never leave your machine. That is the same privacy line as Exploded View Animator and 3D Print on Fabric.
Who is this STL weight calculator for?
Print farm quoting
Ballpark grams before you open the slicer, then push weight into the quote tool.
Etsy 3D sellers
Check whether a customer’s STL fits your bed and material budget.
Fabric sandwich makers
Estimate TPU mesh mass before sending files to 3D Print on Fabric.
Exploded-view prep

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate STL volume?
Drop your STL or OBJ into the tool above. Signed tetrahedron math returns solid volume in cm³ plus a bounding box in mm.
How do I estimate filament weight from an STL?
Multiply solid volume by material density. Example: 12.4 cm³ PLA at 1.24 g/cm³ ≈ 15.4 g solid. Slice for real infill grams.
Is bounding box the same as volume?
No. Box is outer dimensions; volume is mesh interior space. Do not quote from L×W×H alone.
Does infill change STL volume?
The file volume is always solid equivalent. Slicer infill % lowers actual filament use. Slicer grams win for quotes.
Are files uploaded?
No. Everything runs in your browser.
Can I use OBJ files?
Yes. STL and OBJ are supported. Repair non-manifold meshes for accurate volume.
How do I send weight to a quote?
Click Send to quote after analysis. The 3D Print Cost Calculator opens with grams pre-filled.
Will it fit on an A1 mini?
Compare your bounding box to the 180×180 mm A1 mini preset (and other beds) in the tool.
Is it free?
Yes for one file per job. Batch CSV and custom densities unlock for $12 or 40 credits.
Why do slicer grams differ?
Slicers add infill, walls, supports, and brim. This tool reports solid mesh volume only.
What about non-manifold meshes?
Holes and flipped normals can skew volume. Repair in Meshmixer or CAD before trusting weight.
Can I export batch CSV?
Yes with Batch unlock — analyze a folder and download volume, weight, and bbox per file.
