How to make a seamless pattern for print-on-demand

A seamless (tileable) pattern is a single tile that repeats edge-to-edge without a visible seam. POD sellers use them for fabric, wrapping paper, phone cases, apparel, and wallpaper uploads on platforms like Spoonflower and Redbubble.

What you need

Step-by-step

  1. Open Pattern Maker and set tile width/height (square lock is fine to start; unlock for custom W x H).
  2. Upload motifs or load samples. Place elements on the canvas; duplicate and scale as needed.
  3. Watch the 3x3 preview while you edit. If a seam shows, move motifs off the hard edge or mirror/duplicate across the boundary.
  4. Use helpers like Smart Spacing, Scale all, grid, and snap when you want faster layout balance.
  5. Choose background: solid color, uploaded image, or transparent PNG for layered POD designs.
  6. Export PNG at your print size. Optionally save a project so you can swap motifs later.

Quick POD tip

For fabric and most print catalogs, start at 1024 x 1024 or higher. Transparent backgrounds help when the marketplace applies its own base color.

FAQ

What is a seamless pattern?

A single tile that repeats so the left edge matches the right and the top matches the bottom, with no visible join line.

Do I need Photoshop?

No. Kick-Start Pattern Maker runs in the browser and exports PNG ready for many POD workflows.

What size should I export?

256-4096px per side. Use 1024px or higher for print; smaller tiles work well for CSS or web backgrounds.

Can I export with transparency?

Yes. Enable Transparent before export to get a PNG with no background fill.
