Pattern colorway generator for seamless tiles
This pattern colorway generator extracts colors from a seamless tile, swaps palettes, previews the 3×3 repeat, and exports sellable colorways in your browser.
Upload a PNG from Pattern Maker, remap six main swatches, and name files like floral-sage.png for your shop.
No generative AI, no signup on the free path — your tile stays on this device.
What is a colorway in textile design?
A colorway is one palette version of the same pattern — identical lines and shapes, different colors. Buyers on Spoonflower, Etsy, or a mill catalog pick “sage ground” vs “coastal blue” without you redrawing the motif.
Structure stays fixed
Quantization maps pixels to indexed colors. You swap hex values; the repeat geometry does not change.
5–8 per collection
Most surface designers ship five to eight colorways per design. Enough choice for buyers; not so many that listing feels noisy.
Name for POD
Use clear filenames and CSV hex notes so mockups and Spoonflower checks stay organized.
How do I recolor a seamless pattern in the browser?
-
1
Upload your tile
Drop a seamless PNG or JPG. The studio quantizes 3–12 colors (default 6) in a worker so the UI stays smooth.
-
2
Swap the palette
Click each swatch, apply Warm earth / Coastal / Monochrome / Brights presets, or lock the ground color while you shuffle accents.
-
3
Preview and export
Check the 3×3 repeat, save named colorways, export PNG. Unlock batch ZIP plus JSON and CSV for a full collection drop.
Back to the studio when your tile is ready.
Worked example: six colorways from one floral tile (2026)
A Spoonflower seller starts with a six-color botanical tile exported from Pattern Maker at 1800×1800 px (12" at 150 DPI). Original swatches: ground #F5F0E8, leaf #6B8F71, bloom #E07A5F, stem #3D5A40, accent #C9A66B, shadow #2A2A2A.
Collection plan (6 colorways)
| Colorway name | Ground | Accent shift | Export filename |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original sage | #F5F0E8 | Keep as drawn | botanical-sage.png |
| Warm earth | #F0DCC8 | Preset: terracotta blooms | botanical-earth.png |
| Coastal | #F4F1DE | Preset: teal + coral | botanical-coastal.png |
| Monochrome | #E8E8E8 | Greyscale accents | botanical-mono.png |
| Midnight | #1A1A2E | Lock ground; light blooms | botanical-midnight.png |
| Brights | #FFF8E7 | Preset: magenta + cyan | botanical-brights.png |
List price check: if each colorway sells at $5.50/swatch on Spoonflower, six versions multiply listing surface without six separate art files. Run margin on the listing price with the Etsy Fee Calculator if you also sell on Etsy.
How do I keep contrast when swapping pattern palettes?
Recoloring is not “pick pretty hex codes.” The motif must still read at a glance on fabric and wallpaper.
| Tip | What to do in Colorway Studio | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Anchor the ground | Lock ground on the largest swatch | Stops the whole tile from drifting when you apply presets |
| Separate accents | Keep at least ~30 L* lightness steps between neighbors | Two similar greens make leaves disappear into stems |
| Check the repeat | Zoom the 3×3 preview at wallpaper scale | Seams hide low-contrast errors that look fine on one tile |
| Limit neon pairs | Use Brights preset sparingly on small motifs | High-chroma pairs vibrate on polyester prints |
Screen hex is sRGB, not mill Lab. Spoonflower basic cotton is prepared at 150 DPI per Spoonflower image requirements (reviewed 2026-08-31). Order a physical swatch before production.

Pattern colorway generator FAQ
What is a pattern colorway generator?
A pattern colorway generator recolors the same seamless tile into multiple palette versions without redrawing the motif. Kick-Start.ai extracts main colors, lets you swap hex values, previews the repeat, and exports PNG colorways in your browser.
What is a colorway?
A colorway is one palette version of the same pattern structure. Lines and shapes stay identical; only colors change. Collections usually include five to eight colorways.
How many colorways should I list per design?
Most Spoonflower and POD shops offer five to eight. Fewer than four looks thin; more than ten dilutes the collection unless you are licensing to a mill.
Does this use AI to invent new patterns?
No. The tool quantizes your tile and remaps hex values. It does not generate new motifs.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Quantization, remap, and preview run client-side. Your PNG or JPG never leaves your device.
Can I match Pantone for production?
No. Exports are sRGB hex for screen and POD preview. This is not Pantone-certified mill matching.
What file should I upload?
A flat seamless PNG or JPG tile. Photos posterize. Export from Pattern Maker or Illustrator for best results.
What happens after I export colorways?
Mock each palette in the Fabric Mockup Generator, verify DPI in the Spoonflower File Checker, and price listings with the Etsy Fee Calculator.
How is this different from Photoshop?
Photoshop Recolor is powerful but desktop-only. This browser tool is private, fast for weekly palette swaps, and pairs with Pattern Maker in the maker tools catalog.
Need custom colorway pipelines for your design team?
Kick-Start.ai builds private browser tools and AI workflows for surface-design shops — batch naming, mill CSV, and mockup handoffs in 7–14 days.
